The absolute best diet soda I ever had was Canfield's Diet Chocolate Fudge Soda. It tasted just like the chocolate sodas I used to get at the soda fountain back when I was a kid. (Minus the ice cream, of course. *g*)

I haven't been able to find Canfield's in years, though. Pity. It was never on sale, of course, but it was worth paying full price for.

We don't seem to have much variety in diet sodas out here in Denver, for some reason. But the ones I like the best are: Diet Coke with Splenda, Diet Dr. Pepper, and Diet Cherry-Vanilla Dr. Pepper. We don't seem to have any fruit flavors except for the ubiquitous lemon-lime, and of course Fresca.

OOoo wait, I forgot -- RC recently started putting out some fruit flavors -- white grape, orange, and one other that I've forgotten. They are pretty tasty, too. But they go down so smooth that I find myself drinking twice as many as a diet cola. So, I pretty much stick to colas.

I don't mind the Nutrasweet taste, and I've never noticed the side-effects that other people complain about (i.e. headaches, etc). But I do prefer Splenda to Nutrasweet, when I have a choice. (Though by this time I've drunk so much Nutrasweet over the years that when all the really nasty long-term side-effects start showing up, no doubt I'll be the textbook case. *g*)

St. Thomas
Target has a sale this week on the Pepsi Jazz, 20 oz bottles, 2 liter bottles, and 12-pack cans. I bought a 12-pk of the cherry vanilla for $3. Even though I haven't tried it yet, I am sure I will like it. 2-Liter bottles don't fit very well in my fridge.

I first tried this about a week ago, and I'm drinking some this morning. It's delightful! Pepsi really has a winner here, although I fear it may not catch on with the masses. Perhaps I've just been drinking diet sodas for too long so much so that the aspartame taste almost never bothers me, but I don't know if I'd be able to tell that Jazz Strawberries & Cream was diet if I didn't know already. There's such a rich taste to it. Pepsi always has flavored its diet sodas much better than Coke, in my opinion. The only drawback to the Jazz brand is that stores don't seem to discount it when other Pepsi brans are on sale. No matter, I'll probably pay a little extra for this treat now and then.

12th-Aug-2006 04:34 pm - Jones Sugar-Free Green Apple Soda
zellouisa / bw
I've tried and enjoyed Jones' sugar-free black cherry soda before. Jones soda are available at Target in 12-packs, and I'm not sure where else they can be found. Last weekend, I noticed that they also had sugar-gree green apple soda. I didn't expect to like it a whole lot. The last apple soda I had was many years ago, maybe back in the early 1990s, when Pepsi briefly had a Slice Apple soda (in addition to their original lemon-lime, orange, and maybe one or two others).

I don't particularly enjoy the green apple soda. It is sweet enough; it reminds me of hard ciders, but without the alcohol. But those are not beverages you can chugh down, and I like sodas that I can drink a lot of without tiring of the taste. There's a higher-than-usual amount of sodium in this green apple soda, and I can taste it, and that detracts from the overall apple taste.

12th-Aug-2006 04:22 pm - Fanta Zero Orange

I figured it was a matter of time until Fanta Zero came out, and it may have been out for awhile for all I know. But I just discovered it at Lowe's Foods in Raleigh, NC yesterday, and I picked up a two-liter of it. I've now just tried it for the first time.

Fanta Zero is adequate, but it's not the best diet orange soda I've tasted. The best I've had is Diet Crush. I am not good at describing tastes, and so my blog entries in this community are not going to be incredibly descriptive. Overall, I like that Fanta Zero Orange is not too sweet, but the orange flavor isn't wonderful.

In an attempt to try to figure out what makes a great-tasting diet soda, I'll post the ingredients and vital stats of each beverage I write about. I'll add a lot of tags, too, to aid with future data compilation.

12th-Aug-2006 04:18 pm - What is dietsodas all about?
zellouisa / bw
I'm not sure what this community will evolve into. I don't know if and when I'll promote it, or if I'll just let people find it, those people who love diet sodas so much that they just have to search LJ for a community about diet sodas. For now, I'll just start recording my thoughts on diet sodas that I've been drinking lately. I usually have these thoughts while I'm at work, since that's where I consume the bulk of my diet soda, but I'm home now, and I've just tried something new, so I'll post about that.
